Day 5: Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Pace/Speed Work | 5 miles | Memorial Field Track, Moorestown, NJ

I woke up early this morning to see the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade with Emily. She was able to secure great grandstand seating, so it was an opportunity we just couldn't miss, despite needing to rush back to Moorestown for our respective families' Thanksgiving Day dinners.

(actual results in red)

3 miles @ 6:20 pace | 7:10 pace average

2 x 800m (200m rest) @ 2:47 pace | 3:01 pace average

4 x 100 sprints | complete

Today's workout was heartbreaking. Due to a mental math calculation error, I thought a 1:50/lap (quarter mile) put me at a 6:20 pace. Not so. Try 7:10. For some reason, while running around the track, I was only looking at my quarter mile splits which were consistently 1:50 or less. I couldn't figure out why "6:20 pace" felt so easy. Because it was actually a 7:10-7:20 pace. I was crushed when I finished my last lap and my watch read 21:30. Doh!

  1. 9:15 AM Race start at Boathouse Row in Philadelphia. Had a nice night out with many '02 SJP guys in the Fairmount area on Wednesday night. Cara and I were fortunate enough to be able to stay at my sister's new apartment in Fairmount since she is in CA for this week.

The race went well and I finished 5th and literally right on the heels of the 4th place finisher. I was unfortunately in the position of chasing him down and while my finishing kick was solid enough to maintain 5th, I was able to close the gap which #4 held over me but fell just shy of besting him.

5 5/8th miles over "hilly terrain"
    Official Time: 33:01.44
    Average pace: ~5:52

I really felt the burn on this one, especially toward the end, but it was a solid tempo workout for the week.

Looking forward to an easy day tomorrow and Saturday.
